All About Reno Tahoe Photography Show at Paisan's
July 1- Sept 25, 2009
July 1 – September 25, 2009
The Reno Tahoe Area has an abundance of natural beauty which is captured by these three well established local photographers--Mark Harmon, Mark Vollmer and Henry Egghart
Mark Harmon
Mark Harmon is a well known photographer of the Tahoe and Reno region. He is also the owner of Truckee River Gallery. The gallery is located next to the Century Riverside Theatre along the Truckee River in Reno, Nevada.
Mark Harmon’s photography is a culmination of three major parts –his love and appreciation of nature and world around us, his visual acuity, and his strong interest in technology. He became interested in photography at a very young age, when he shot his first roll of film on his parent’s Kodak Instamatic camera and took it to kindergarten. By 6th grade he was shooting with his father’s SLR 35 mm camera. In Junior High he had a make shift darkroom in his bathroom and was developing his own black and white prints. In High School he started processing color slides, and in college he opened a rental darkroom store and studio. He has shot professionally as a commercial and product photographer and his work has been seen in such places as the Wall Street Journal.
High school is where computers came into the picture. Mark had a real fascination with computer graphics and this eventually led to a career in computers. Mark has been published several times as a computer artist, game developer and desktop publisher. In the earlier years of personal computers, Mark kept pursuing the idea of digital photography and played with many early attempts at digital imagery. Now that digital photography has truly come into its own, Mark has returned to his passion of photography.
Nature plays on Mark’s senses in a way that only photography can explain.
Without the “right” image a photograph is only a limited two-dimensional representation of a moment in time. Although, the “right” image will inspire memories-spray on your face from a raging water fall, the sound of a crashing wave on a beach, the sensation a gentle breeze tipping over you- it is these memories that interact with the image to create a feeling that can take you to places you never get in your living room, bedroom or office. If this occurs, the photographer has succeeded in capturing more than a mere representation:
I have captured feelings. Mark’s goal is to capture images that inspire these feelings in you, the viewer, and will allow you to take little mental journeys.of three
Mark Vollmer
Mark Vollmer is an award-winning outdoor photographer, instructor and freelance writer based in Reno, Nevada. His illustrated feature articles have appeared in Nevada Magazine, and his images have been widely published in regional books, calendars and brochures. Mark’s first book, Tahoe Rim Trail, Exploring the Jewel, which he authored and co-photographed with Reno Gazette-Journal photographer Scott Sady, broke sales records in Reno and Tahoe area bookstores upon its 2003 release.
Mark chooses to use the 35mm format camera for its lightweight versatility that enables him to move easily in the wilderness in search for nature’s special moments of light. His love of photography began with family outings to the Grand Canyon and other Southwest locales as a youngster in Arizona, and later while earning his geology degree in Northern Arizona University. He enjoys sharing with photo workshop students his knowledge and passion for the West that grew out of these early journeys. A student of Galen Rowell, Frans Lanting and David Muench, Mark teaches photo classes of his own through Washoe County Parks, the Tahoe Rim Trail Association, and Truckee Meadows Community College. In April 2007, TMCC awarded Mark Part-Time Instructor of the Year, Continuing Education division, for excellence in teaching photography.
Mark has created multi-media presentations of slides matched to music for over 20 years, more recently in collaboration with local singer/songwriters Joyce Vetter and Jim Eaglesmith. Acclaimed for their “multi-sensory” approach to nature-based themes, the shows are performed for schools, service organizations, and other forms of community outreach in Reno and Carson area venues. Watch for their upcoming DVD’s of original music blended with images. Mark also photographs fragile habitats endangered by encroaching development for local non-profit groups, and seasonal garden splendor of the Wilbur D. May Arboretum for its fundraising projects at Rancho San Rafael Park.
Mark’s photographs have hung in The Alexandratos Gallery and Annex and the Truckee River Gallery and in other galleries in Reno, Sacramento, and South Lake Tahoe. The images on display here reveal his love for the rich natural heritage of Nevada.
Henry Egghart
Henry Egghart has been making photographs since his father gave him a camera at age 11, a German-made folding Kodak Retina. Egghart's love of the outdoors and nature is what fuels his photography. Growing up in the Washington D.C area, Egghart spent much of his free time exploring the rivers and mountains of Virginia and West Virginia. A 22-year resident of Reno, Egghart finds the mountains and deserts of this area a constant source of inspiration. "What I do," says Egghart, "is capture special moments in this space-time continuum that we share, to present with the message: "Hey, this is a beautiful world!"
Egghart is largely self-taught, having spent countess hours poring over photo books by Ansel Adams, Galen Rowel, Elliott Porter and others, as well as the work of painters such as Thomas Moran and Fredrick Turner. Also, Egghart has attended photo workshops by Galen Rowel, Frans Lanting, Claude Fiddler, and Robert Glenn Ketchum. "Ultimately, its all about the light," explains Egghart. "After all, the word ‘photography’ comes from the Greek phos (light) and graphos (to write); photography is writing with light."
"When one looks at some of the glowing skies in Thomas Moran’s paintings of the West, for example," Egghart explains, "one could believe they are a painter’s embellishment of nature, but such moments are out there. "If you spend enough time in the mountains and the desert, you will witness such scenes. In those moments, when storms are building or breaking up, at dawn, at dusk, are the times when the Earth reveals herself at her best and I take her portrait," says Egghart.
The National Weather Service appreciates Egghart’s eye for the skies; it purchased his work to hang in their Reno office. Egghart has exhibited at the REI store in Reno, the Nevada State Library and the Nevada Artist’s Association Gallery in Carson City, Artown, and Alexandratos Gallery Annex.
